When we go out and seek knowledge about food history in order to impress our foodie friends, we must first acknowledge one fact. And that is the fact that countless combinations of bread and pastry which were filled with delicious meats and cheeses and were further dressed with the favored condiments of the day have been eaten and enjoyed since ancient times. Most Food historians will usually attribute the invention of the first sandwich to a dude named John Montagu, who was 4th Earl of Sandwich. It is believed that this Englishman was very fond of gambling and other games of chance. As the legend goes, in the year 1762, and in the middle of a 24 hour gambling streak he asked a cook to prepare his meal in a way that so that it wouldn’t interfere with the game he was playing. The cook then fixed for him a piece of sliced meat that was wedged in between two slices of toast. This was absolutely perfect as the meal required no utensils at all and was able to be eaten with only one hand, while leaving the other hand free to keep playing the game. The sad part about the story is that the name of actual inventor of the first sandwich (who was obviously that cook who created it in the first place) was never known or remembered for posterity.

And to make matters worse sometimes, sandwiches recipes were hardly ever recorded in cookbooks because so many of them were thrown together. And in England they were only seen to be restaurant food and not useful in homes. And in America, colonial cooks did not like to imitate British culinary trends. It wasn’t until long after the War of 1812 that Americans began using the term “sandwich”.

The big difference between early English and American sandwiches was that England preferred using beef in their sandwiches, while Americans preferred using ham. It really came down to which meat was more available.

The long tradition of enjoying beignets goes all the way back to Ancient Roman times, even though the method of frying foods goes even further back in history. There is written history that refers to the ancient Greeks who fried many of their foods in olive oil throughout the 5th century BC, and several other cultures formulated their own frying techniques as well. The very term beignet can actually refer to two varieties which depend on the kind of pastry. The French-style beignet is found in the United States, and refers specifically to deep-fried choux pastry. Beignets are also made from yeast pastry, which are called boules de Berlin in French, and this refers to Berliner doughnuts that are shaped like a ball (so they don’t have the usual doughnut hole) and are filled with jam or fruit.

In country of Corsica, their beignets are made using chestnut flour are called fritelli. Donuts (doughnuts) in Quebec and throughout Canada are called either Beigne or Beignet in French.

Beignets are generally seen in New Orleans as a breakfast product that is comes with powdered sugar on top. They are generally made right before they are eaten so that they are hot and fresh. Different versions of this fried dough are found in different cuisines internationally. However, the term beignet comes from the French. In the United States, the beignet has become especially popular in the New Orleans Creole cuisine and is served as desserts or some other sweet variation. They were introduced to city of New Orleans during the 1700’s by French colonists, who came from “the old mother country”, who also ushered in much of the Creole cooking style. Gnocchi are actually soft dumplings that are typically made from semolina, normal wheat flour, eggs, variety of cheeses, potatoes, breadcrumbs, some cornmeal, or ingredients similar to these. The dough that is used for gnocchi is usually rolled out, and then it is cut in small pieces that are about the size of your thumb. After that, the gnocchi are pressed down with a fork to create ridges for holding sauce. Or some people like to just cut them into small lumps. Like other Italian meals, healthy gnocchi recipes have lots of variety and different names in different regions. Gnocchi with White Beans dish was outstanding exceeded my expectations. I followed the recipes almost exact. One difference was in a separate skillet I put a tablespoon of olive oil and started cooking the gnocchi by themselves ( about 5 min ) while at the same time in the main skillet I was cooking the onions/garlic. White Rice Helps Stabilize Blood Sugar Levels

For some people, this is very weird because white rice is primarily starch and pretty high on the ol’ glycemic index. This glycemic index is typically used to give foods a score based on how they will influence blood sugar. We know that high glycemic foods like fruit juices, sodas, sweet breakfast cereals, candies, breads and even white rice, can actually spike blood sugar levels much more easier than other kinds of foods. If left unchecked, high blood sugar will eventually lead to excessive weight gain and even type II diabetes.

However, there is something that is never said about that glycemic index. It is actually a calculation of how specific foods affect blood sugar when a given food is eaten by itself. The key point here is that no one ever sits down to eat white rice by itself.

This is certainly not the case with most people. It is always eaten with other foods, and those foods are things like vegetables, meats, fats and even bone broth.
